“I am no longer a job seeker but a job creator…”
Wasswa Jackson was sponsored in 1996 when he was in Nursery School. In 2012, Wasswa is now in his first year of University and studying to become a lawyer with the help of his sponsor. If you were to ask Wasswa if he was a follower or a leader, he would choose leader. Wasswa does not want to simply be one of many in a crowd. That is why when he finished High School and was waiting for his admittance into University, he decided he would create his own job, along with the help of his mother, to help supplement his university school fees.
He started his business by borrowing 150,000 uganda shillings (roughly $70usd) as an initial capital to help him build an African Craft Shop and then got to work. His shop, contained within his 2 roomed house displays a variety of items for sale, including shoes, paper beads, table mats, hand bags and much more.
Wasswa told us that like any other business, he has faced a few challenges such as, market penetration, high costs of raw materials, limited work space and a limited power supply but he is not ready to give up yet. Wasswa plans on completing law school and starting a craft skills training school so that he can help empower young people like himself become a nation of job creators rather than just job seekers.
In the past several months, Wasswa has been witness to a boost in his craft sales through short term Missions teams that come in and out of ARM. He is thankful to God, for richly blessing him and he looks forward to a bright future ahead.
Well done, Wasswa! We at ARM are proud of you!
